“Lets face it – is he worth spending money on?” – West Brom fan pundit on whether Baggies should re-sign PL player

Despite being three years into a four year deal with Brighton and Hove Albion, Matthew Clarke is still yet to feature for the club.

Last summer, he was loaned to West Brom, and has gone on to make 27 appearances so far for the Baggies.

With just one year left on his current deal once the summer arrives, it could be that Brighton are willing to allow Clarke to leave the club when the summer window opens, looking to cash in on him rather than lose him in 2023 for free.

With that being said, we asked FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Matt for his thoughts on whether or not the club should try to sign Clarke permanently this summer.

“Matt Clarke’s a funny one, I don’t think he’s been too bad at all this season, he’s probably been one of Albion’s better defenders. ” Matt explained to FLW.

“However, for a few reasons, I probably wouldn’t be fussed either way, whether they tried to sign him or not.”

“Lets face it – is he worth spending money on? When you’ve got Dara O’Shea, Ajayi, Kipre, Taylor’s coming through – they’ve got quite a few centre-backs.”

“Will he shunt the progress of O’Shea who needs to be playing regular football because he is Albion’s brightest prospect?”

“It all depends I suppose on if they want to play a back three next year.”

“If Clarke is going to be playing a fixed role on the left side of a back three he has shown he can play that this season – it all depends on the manager.”
