Leeds remain ‘favourites’ for impressive summer capture with discussions ongoing

Leeds United are still in pole position to sign Brenden Aaronson from Red Bull Salzburg with transfer talks ‘ongoing’, according to one journalist.

Leeds were hoping to improve their midfield in January by bringing USA international Aaronson to Elland Road. The 21-year-old generally operates just behind the striker, but can also play on either flank if required.

Leeds chief Victor Orta acted on the interest by launching two bids. They stood at £15million and then £20m.

However, Salzburg held firm and decided to reject both offers. They had no intention of letting one of their most important stars go midway through a campaign.

It was unclear where Leeds’ pursuit of the player would go following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. But the arrival of American Jesse Marsch actually puts them in a stronger position to capture Aaronson.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg provides an update on the transfer hunt. He claims Leeds are the ‘favourites’ to snatch Aaronson from Salzburg’s grasp.

The Whites are buoyed by the fact he ‘wants to leave’ in the summer. Presumably this is to take the next step in his career.

Discussions between Salzburg and Leeds are ongoing, and could result in a breakthrough over the next few months.

There will be competition for the 18-cap international, but Marsch’s side have a huge head start.

Plettenburg states Aaronson has no release clause as part of his current contract. As such, Leeds should be able to agree a deal for between £20-25m.
