Larrazabal wins sixth European title after play-off in Hartbeespoort

Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal claimed his sixth European circuit title by winning a three-man play-off in the MyGolfLife Open in South Africa on Sunday.

The 38-year-old former fish-farm worker from Barcelona completed his 72 holes on 22-under 266, level with compatriot Adri Arnaus and Jordan Smith from England at Pecanwood Golf and Country Club.

Larrazabal and Smith birdied the par-four 18th in the play-off while Arnaus was eliminated after his putt veered right of the hole.

Smith found thick rough second time round at the 18th and after making the green with his second, three putted for a bogey five.

Larrazabal struck his second close to the hole and sank a birdie putt for his first title since winning the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

"What a day," said visibly relieved Larrazabal. "I received wonderful support from the South African spectators and I thank them.

"Jordan went for broke with his first putt at the second play-off hole, and when he missed it made my task that much easier."

Larrazabal began the final round at a course 73 kilometres (45 miles) northwest of Johannesburg two strokes behind leader Hennie du Plessis from South Africa.

While Du Plessis faded, the Spaniard, ranked 207 in the world, had a topsy-turvy round with an eagle, six birdies, three bogeys and eight pars.

The DP World Tour remains in South Africa this week for the Steyn City Championship at a course just north of Johannesburg.

Leading final-round scores from the DP World Tour's MyGolfLife Open in Hartbeespoort, South Africa, on Sunday (GBR/IRL unless stated/par 72):
