Lakay over the moon to be back in Bafana fold as big test awaits against world champions France
Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Lyle Lakay has revealed his delight after his long-overdue call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad.
The 30-year-old has arguably been the best left-back in the country, churning out solid displays for the Brazilians season after season.
However, Lakay has consistently been overlooked but now has finally gained the recognition he deserved.
The left-back, who can also be deployed at left-wing, is looking forward to testing himself against Guinea (Friday, 19:00 SA time) and world champions France (Tuesday, 21:15 SA time).
"It's a great feeling, and it is good to be back; I think the last time was maybe September last year – I am not sure," Lakay said via the Downs media team.
"I have always said if I am in, I will be happy that it's a good thing, and if I am not, it won't be the end of the world, and I just have to continue working hard.
"People will talk and say it is players we watch on the big stage – (Kylian) Mbappé is one of the top players in the world right now. But for me, personally, I take it as being able to test myself against the best in the world.
"Their level is obviously higher than our level. But at the end of the day, you test yourself against the best, which is something everybody wants to do and to see just how far you can go."
