Lagos shuts down school after two-year-old pupil’s death

The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori, Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, after a swimming pool accident led to the death of a two-year-old female, Rapheala Ogbodo, on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

The girl’s mother had taken to X to allege that her daughter was electrocuted contrary to the report she got of that the two-year-old drowned in a swimming pool.

The user of X shared a photo of the swimming pool with barricades and wondered how her daughter was able to beat the barricade and reach the swimming pool.

Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education have visited the scene of the accident to carry out a preliminary investigation and ascertain the root cause of the unfortunate incident.

The state government extended its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and expressed its commitment to preventing future occurrences.

The Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, stated that all school owners and caregivers must comply with safety regulations to prevent accidents in the State.

Mojola added that more details would be made available upon completion of investigations into the accident.
