LAFC announce Gareth Bale signing, as coach anticipates ‘invaluable’ impact Wales legend will have

LAFC have confirmed the signing of Gareth Bale, who says he is “extremely excited” to join the MLS club.

Bale became a free agent at the end of the 2021-22 season, when his contract with Real Madrid expired. He delayed his decision over finding a new club until after he could guide Wales to the World Cup.

Their play-off campaign was successful, so his attention quickly turned to finding a new home. Despite links with a return to Wales with Cardiff City, Bale has opted for an American adventure.

His move to Los Angeles FC has now been confirmed on an initial 12-month contract, which has options to extend into 2024.

Bale could make his debut for LAFC next month in their derby against LA Galaxy.

The 32-year-old feels he is making the right move at the right moment of his career. But he is not just going to the MLS to wind down his time as a footballer; instead, the five-time Champions League winner wants more trophies.

“I am extremely excited for this move to LAFC,” Bale told his new club’s website.

“This is the right place for me and my family and the right time in my career, and I cannot wait to get started working with the team and getting ready to win more trophies in Los Angeles.”

For his new head coach Steve Cherundolo, Bale will be a major asset. Indeed, Cherundolo believes the former Tottenham star can have a major impact – to the extent few others could.
