Kylian Mbappe set to captain France

Kylian Mbappe has succeeded the retired Hugo Lloris as France captain, according to a number of media outlets in the country.

Manager Didier Deschamps reportedly informed his squad of the news at their training base in Clairefontaine on Monday.

Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe, who has scored 36 goals in 66 appearances for Les Bleus, was chosen to wear the captain's armband ahead of Antoine Griezmann, who is set to be named vice-captain.

The vacancy arose after Lloris called time on his international career in January after losing the World Cup final against Argentina a month earlier.

France host the Netherlands at the Stade de France in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier on Friday, with the Republic of Ireland facing the 2018 World Cup winners in Dublin three days later.
