Kobbie Mainoo drops subtle hint about his Manchester United future
Kobbie Mainoo said he was "just happy to be on the pitch for Manchester United" when he was asked about his position switch against FCSB in the Europa League on Thursday.
Mainoo started in the left-hand side No.10 role in Ruben Amorim's formation in Bucharest and the youngster sent a reminder of his talent with a goal and an assist in the 2-0 victory.
The United academy graduate provided a brilliant pass for Diogo Dalot's opening goal of the game and eventually got on the scoresheet himself in the 67th minute, calmly slotting home from inside the box to make amends for missing a golden opportunity earlier in the contest.
At the beginning of the month, Mainoo's future suddenly made headlines due to negotiations over a new contract between the club and the player's representatives coming to a halt.
United opened contract talks with Mainoo's camp in March last year and negotiations were heading in the right direction before stalling, which has led to uncertainty over his future.
But Mainoo played with a smile against FCSB and suggested he's just happy to represent United when he spoke to TNT Sports. "It was definitely a tough game, as we expected," he said.
"It's a tough place to come and the atmosphere was really good and right now, it's just important to keep on winning, we need more and more wins, and we want to go as far as possible in this tournament, so this is how it starts.
"I enjoyed it [the new position]. I'm just happy to be on the pitch for Manchester United, so wherever the manager needs me to play. Tonight was higher up [as a No.10] and I enjoyed it."
Mainoo joked that he was "annoyed" at his missed chance in the first half, and sounded relieved that United automatically qualified for the last 16 of the Europa
