Knife found on tram with man arrested before his friends shout 'homophobic abuse' at staff

A knife was found on a tram in Manchester as a man was arrested, before his friends then hurled 'homophobic abuse' at staff on Tuesday (July 25).

Officers from the Greater Manchester Police Transport Unit responded to reports of the knife being left on a tram in Radcliffe before a suspect was identified and detained.

Police said the suspect's friends then 'interfered' by shouting 'homophobic abuse' at Metrolink staff and officers before all three were arrested and taken into custody.

The force said they will 'not tolerate' the carrying of weapons, or abuse on staff and that officers would take 'robust action' with offenders and that 'time in a cell' would let them 'reflect on their actions'.

A post shared by Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers from GMP Transport Unit responded to reports of a knife being left on a tram in Radcliffe earlier. A suspect was then identified by Transport for Greater Manchester Travel Safe officers who subsequently detained the male.

"Despite the males friends interfering whilst shouting homophobic abuse at Metrolink staff and our officers all three were arrested for various offences.

"Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate the carrying of weapons, assaults on Metrolink Staff or homophobic abuse and will take robust action in all circumstances. Hopefully some time in a cell will give them time to reflect on their actions."
