Kilbeggan races manager Paddy Dunican dies aged 61

Kilbeggan races stalwart and manager Paddy Dunican has died at the age of 61.

He had been in charge of the Westmeath venue for more than three decades having replaced Tom McCormack as general manager in 1988.

Tributes have been pouring in from his Kilbeggan community and those in the world of racing.

"He was one of the toughest people in Irish racing, so we're all in shock," Fairyhouse racecourse manager Peter Roe told the Racing Post.

"Paddy was Mr Kilbeggan. It was his family, it was his life, it was his centrepiece. He loved it so much. Often he would do things that might not suit the industry but if it would suit Kilbeggan he would just do it."

"We were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Paddy Dunican this morning," Limerick racecourse said.

"Paddy was the face of Kilbeggan Races for many years, our interim manager for our Christmas Racing Festival 2021 and regular steward at our racecourse. He'll be sadly missed. Condolences to all the family. Rest in peace Paddy."

"We were shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Paddy Dunican this morning," Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA club said.

"Paddy was the face of Kilbeggan Races for many years and a great supporter of our club, having attended our dinner dance only a few weeks ago. RIP Paddy."

Funeral details have yet to be announced. Dunican is survived by six siblings.
