Kieran Trippier’s injury a concern for Newcastle boss Eddie How after latest win
NEWCASTLE: Eddie Howe has confirmed Newcastle United again face a nervous wait on the fitness of match-winner Kieran Trippier.
The January-window-signing has scored two free kicks in the past two games, to earn the Magpies six points against Everton and Aston Villa.
In both encounters, though, the England international has been forced off with injury.
While the calf problem suffered against the Toffees was shaken off in time for Sunday’s game, the knock sustained against Steven Gerrard’s Villa looks to be a lot more serious.
Trippier was sent to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary after being taken off just minutes after half-time, for an X-ray, the results of which are still awaited.
The 31-year-old did return to St. James’ Park after the final whistle to talk through the issue with Howe pitchside, however the head coach offered no update to fans and press.
He said: “Trippier got stamped on and he couldn’t continue with a problem on the top of his foot. He’s gone for an X-ray at the hospital.
“We’re keeping everything crossed that there is no broken bone there.”
That blow took little away from what was an impressive show by the Magpies, as Dan Burn, in particular, caught the eye on what was a memorable debut for United.
When asked about the central defender’s performance, Howe said: “Very similar to Matt Targett on Tuesday, he fitted in superbly. He was very calm, composed and used the ball really well.
“He put out a lot of fires for us with some very good defensive positioning. I thought together with Fabian (Schar), I thought they played very well,” he said. “They were supported well by the players in front of them.
