Kickboxing authorities urge schools to adopt sport for youth development

Authorities in the kickboxing community have called on schools and local communities to integrate kickboxing into their sports programs to promote fitness, discipline, and self-defence among young people.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, National Kickboxing coach, Cletus Okagbe, while addressing game masters and students, stressed the importance of introducing the sport to youths.

He explained that the initiative aims to create a pathway for young athletes to compete in national and international tournaments, potentially leading to professional careers.

Okagbe, who was in Taraba State to promote the sport, noted that kickboxing is gaining popularity worldwide and offers an essential avenue for personal development and healthy competition.

He also announced plans to provide free training and mentorship for aspiring athletes in Taraba, stressing the sport’s ability to teach discipline, resilience, and focus.

“Kickboxing is not just about fighting; it’s about building character and improving both physical and mental well-being,” Okagbe stated, urging youths to take advantage of the growing support for the sport.

Supporting Okagbe’s position, the State Director of Sports, George Shitta, encouraged young people to consider kickboxing as a sport that promotes personal growth and competitive success.

He noted the broader national effort to include kickboxing in youth sports, aiming to develop future athletes capable of representing the country in local and international events.

“Kickboxing offers more than just physical fitness; it builds character and mental toughness. We want to see more young people getting involved in the sport,” Shitta remarked.
