Five years ago, UFC star Khamzat Chimaev spent eight hours in an Irish prison after flying to the country to confront Conor McGregor.
Chimaev, who was born in Chechenya and raised in Sweden, is one of the UFC's hottest prospects and challenges former title challenger Gibert Burns tonight at UFC 273. 'Borz' is unbeaten in 10 professional fights and has finished every opponent he's faced.
The 27-year-old has admitted he only started training MMA after watching McGregor win the UFC featherweight title by knocking out Jose Aldo. Chimaev's experience as a freestyle wrestling champion in Sweden was beneficial during his early training days and he competed in his first amateur bout in 2017.
At the same time Chimaev had just kicked off his amateur career, McGregor began trading words with Khabib Nurmagomedov. Insults between the pair became personal in the lead up to their eventual 2018 fight, with McGregor targeting his religion and nationality. Chimaev intended to cross paths with McGregor in the street or confront the Irishman at his gym upon arriving in Dublin, but the Chechen only got as far as the airport when he landed.
