Kevin Thelwell has two transfer questions he must answer as huge Everton task clear

With all the focus on Everton’s fight to survive in the Premier League, Kevin Thelwell’s appointment as director of football has gone a little bit under the radar so far. But with the club facing yet another huge summer, he will no doubt be brought into the spotlight as the Blues aim to perform yet another squad overhaul.

Thelwell was named as the club’s new football chief last month. He made the move to Merseyside from New York Red Bulls, where he had been in place since February 2020. Before working in America, the 48-year-old was previously sporting director at Wolves, where he had also operated as head of football development and recruitment.

Everton's new director of football comes into the role replacing Marcel Brands. The Dutchman left the club last year having been on Merseyside for just over three years.

And while Everton’s new football chief may not be feeling the pressure just yet, he needs to be prepared to feel pressure like he has never felt before. That is because the expectation on him this summer is going to be huge. Everton supporters are not just expecting, but demanding a squad overhaul takes place.

Another season like the one that is currently occurring is not even being considered. But in order for that to be the case, Thelwell is going to have to produce something special.

Not only is he going to have to bring players in for an affordable price, but he will also need to offload some of the club’s deadwood. But given the inflated wages and long contracts many of the deadwood are on, shipping them out won’t be easy. Everton’s recent transfer business has left a loft to be desired, both when it comes to incomings and outgoings.

Five new signings arrived in January, but plenty of questions were asked.
