Kevin McStay: Derry prove Ulster credentials against 'shocking' Tyrone

Kevin McStay believes that Derry are now genuine Ulster contenders following their comprehensive destruction of All-Ireland champions Tyrone in Omagh.

Speaking to the RTÉ GAA podcast, McStay said that it was the tone of the 1-18 to 0-10 Ulster Championship success that has catapulted the Oakleaf County into the provincial picture.

"The manner of it is what's significant in that it’s from the gun to the finish line," he said of Rory Gallagher’s side’s triumph.

"It was consistent application of an attitude and a plan that I’d say they’d long contemplated back home in Derry.

"They rode it out with real efficiency and commitment to every aspect, they were tactically perfect.

"They never got ahead of that, in other words even when they got the gap, they still ran the two minutes out of their shot clock if that’s what they wanted to do, if they felt that was the right thing to do.

"I thought it was superb. Their commitment to that championship game was complete.

"This was the All-Ireland for them. That’s always the problem for the champion team when you’re being chased, this game becomes that All-Ireland for the opposition."
