Kenny Pickett: Pittsburgh Steelers QB receives damning assessment during minicamp

A rather worrying assessment has emerged surrounding Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are certainly entering into a new era at Heinz Field this upcoming season, as for the first time since 2003, they will be entering it without the services of franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger following his retirement this past offseason.

To address the situation, they brought two new quarterbacks into their ranks, Mitch Trubisky as a free agent following his spells with the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills whilst also spending their first-round pick in the recent NFL Draft on the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett.

This is in addition to last year’s backup quarterback Mason Rudolph, and based on the first few weeks of OTAs and minicamp, it seems as if Trubisky is entrenched as the team’s starter with Rudolph and Pickett serving as the team’s 2nd and 3rd choice respectively. 

Pickett starting that low on the chain does make some level of sense, after all he is the least NFL-experienced quarterback, but on top of that there was the perception coming into the NFL draft that the quarterback talent wasn’t exactly the greatest this year, which might explain why he needs the extra time to sit back and develop.

The fact that quarterbacks were not the commodity that they have been in previous years, as demonstrated with Pickett being taken first at #20 and the next one off the board not being until Desmond Ridder was picked by the Atlanta Falcons at #74 might indicate that the Steelers ‘reached’ when it came to their selection of him.
