Kate Garraway says 'no one expected' as she explains husband Derek's wishes for new documentary

Kate Garraway has given more insight into her next documentary as her late husband Derek Draper is set to tell his own story. The new film has been confirmed following Derek's tragic passing in January this year.

ITV will show Kate Garraway: Derek's Story, which documents the final year of his life, later this month and it follows the two previous award-winning films Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.

The documentary grants close access to Derek and his wife and the film provides an insight into his personal struggles with illness and highlights the challenges faced by millions of people in the UK living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them.

But it's set to be bittersweet as Kate announced on January 5 that her husband and father of her two children had sadly passed away, almost four years after Covid changed his and his family's life forever. Derek, a former Labour lobbyist-turned-psychotherapist, became ill with the virus at the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

He was taken to hospital where he was put in an induced coma and it was more than a year before he returned home to his wife and their children in April 2021, needing around-the-clock care.

When asked why he wanted to take part in this film before his heartbreaking passing, Derek said: "I want to be heard." And now Kate has opened up on Good Morning Britain about how the documentary was Derek's idea as she hadn't thought about making another.
