Kano Pillars draw first blood as Volleyball Premier League begins

Defending champions, Kano Pillars, yesterday defeated 2021 National Division 1 League champions, Kada Kings, in the opening match of the 2022 Nigeria Volleyball Premier League.

The premier league, which started on Wednesday, will run till September 26 at the indoor sports hall of Akure Stadium, Ondo State. Former champions, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) will today meet Sunshine Spikers, while NSCDC will face Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

In a local derby, youthful OFFA VC will begin their campaign against newly promoted Kwara United VC, while Nigeria Correctional Service will test their firepower against Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Spikers, led by coach Elishama Elam.

In the women’s category, Kada Emeralds will be up against Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service with the longest serving volleyball player, Dorathy Egbim, will face Benue Queens, two newly promoted sides, Kwara United and Zamfara Queens, will slug it out in the third women’s match.

Defending champions, NSCDC, began the bid to hold on to their title, yesterday, when the met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Spikers in the last match.

The technical representative on the board of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Martin Melandri, said five male and four female matches would be played yesterday and today.

Melandri added that the new FIVB rules would be applied in this year’s premier league, as agreed by the coaches, referees and stakeholders.
