Kalvin Phillips reveals the one person who convinced him to leave Leeds for Man City

Kalvin Phillips says the decision to move to Manchester City was a “no brainer” when he realised it would mean working under Pep Guardiola.

The 26-year-old has outlined that the club were “the only team” he would have considered leaving Leeds for and that he feels he is “home already”. The England star arrived at the Eithad on a £42million transfer last month.

He is expected to play a crucial part in Guardiola’s plans next season as the club try to secure a third consecutive Premier League title and an elusive first Champions League trophy. Phillips described how Guardiola’s presence at the club had a massive impact on him choosing to leave his hometown club for City.

“The fact that they are managed by obviously one of the best managers in the world, it was a no-brainer when there were reports that City were interested.” he told GQ while on City’s pre-season tour in the USA.

“It was the only team that I was ever going to come to if I left Leeds. They (players) want to win as many trophies as possible, but the main thing was to be managed by Pep and try and learn as much as I can.

“It feels like I'm home already. It feels like I'm in a team that regards me as one of their own already.”

Phillips, who is currently having an Amazon documentary made about his career, detailed how his relentless, non-stop running trait will mould under Guardiola.

“When I played with Leeds, there was a lot of mileage that you had to cover but with City, because we have the ball for so much time, they aren't really bothered about distance recovery,” he explained.
