Just Cause 5: Square Enix confirms development of new game in franchise

Square Enix has confirmed that a new Just Cause game is in development.

The developers sold their Western portfolio to Embracer Group last month and, as a result, the status of some of the IPs owned by Square Enix were subsequently left up in the air.

But Gamespot reports that the president and CEO of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, has confirmed that a new Just Cause exists and is being developed.

He said: “The Just Cause franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”

Square Enix has not provided any further information since Matsuda’s quotes, and Gamespot makes it clear that there remains some confusion over whether or not this is going to be a new mainline franchise entry.

Just Cause 4 is the last entry in the series, which released in December of 2018, and received a score of 65 on Metacritic from 45 reviews.

There is the possibility that Square Enix are currently developing Just Cause 5 but there is also the possibility that the game in question is Just Cause: Mobile.

Just Cause: Mobile has been announced and is in development for iOS and Android, by a separate team that is led by Square Enix.

It is set to include a story campaign, competitive multiplayer featuring up to 30 players, and four-player Co-Op missions.

It was initially slated for a 2021 release but is now set to release in 2022.

The FAQ section on the official Square Enix website has outlined the fact, though, that the developers do not currently have any plans to make Just Cause a mobile-only franchise, which suggests that there may well be a Just Cause 5 sooner rather than later.

We’ll let you know as soon as we get any formal confirmation.
