Jurgen Klopp calls for better treatment of Liverpool Women after WSL promotion

Jurgen Klopp has congratulated Liverpool Women after they secured promotion to the Women’s Super League at the weekend.

The Reds clinched the Championship title in style after beating Bristol City 4-2 with two games to spare.

They will return to England’s top flight for the 2022/23 season following a two-year exile.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of the men’s clash with Benfica this evening, Klopp lauded Matt Beard and his side’s dominant campaign.

“Congratulations — I sent messages yesterday, I was really happy. I was following it [the Championship] all the time, I was always looking at the results. 

“After the result from last week, it was clear with a draw against Bristol they could make it, and they won. I’m really happy for the girls and for Matt, it’s a big, big thing.”

The German was visibly excited over the news and punched the air to celebrate after being asked the question.

Klopp also encouraged the club to back the women’s side and attempt to right some wrongs from previous years.

After the Reds were relegated to the Championship under Vicky Jepson in 2020, the club faced a lot of criticism regarding its treatment of the women’s side.

A severe lack of community feel played a part in the unravelling of the team, and Liverpool’s owners were slammed after their £50 million investment in upgrading the men’s AXA Training Centre left no room for the women to also benefit.
