Journalist now drops major Steven Gerrard future claim at Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is ‘not under pressure right now’ and has the full backing of the Villa Park hierarchy, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Having led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season, the Midlands giants appointed Gerrard as their head coach last November.

According to the Daily Mail, Gerrard is under increasing amounts of pressure after Villa suffered a 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The report suggests the 42-year-old, who succeeded Dean Smith following his sacking, needs to find consistency after guiding his side to just three wins in their last 14 Premier League games.

Over the course of his reign, Gerrard has led Villa to just 11 wins in 31 matches, with 15 defeats being suffered in the process.

The Liverpool legend made the decision to relinquish Tyrone Mings of his captaincy duties and, instead, named John McGinn as the new skipper before the season got underway.

That left Mings ‘disappointed’, while Gerrard reportedly has a tense relationship with Ollie Watkins, leading to question marks over the striker’s future.

Jones understands that Gerrard’s job is not on the line despite Villa’s underwhelming start to the campaign.

Although a narrow win was claimed over Everton in their second outing of the season, the Midlands outfit have been beaten by newly-promoted Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Despite that, Jones believes Gerrard has the full support of Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “Gerrard is not under pressure right now as he has the backing to keep building this squad and will get more time to put things right.”
