Journalist: Man Utd could welcome "desperate" ace back to Old Trafford in summer amid big chance

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has a ‘big opportunity’ to impress following his loan move to Everton, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 24-year-old has had a tough time since arriving on English shores from Ajax back in September 2020 but now finally has the chance to showcase his true potential.

Van de Beek joined United with an enviable reputation after rising through the ranks at his boyhood club before going on to score 41 goals and provide 34 assists in 175 appearances for the Amsterdam giants.

The creative talent played a pivotal part as Ajax claimed a famous domestic double in 2018/19 as well as their memorable run to the Champions League semi-finals.

His impressive exploits convinced the Red Devils to splash out £35 million to prise him away from the Johan Cruyff Arena, yet things have not gone to plan for Van de Beek so far.

During his time at Old Trafford, the Netherlands international made just four Premier League starts in 18 months and was often forced to watch on from the sidelines in frustration.

Even the arrival of interim manager Ralf Rangnick following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal didn’t bring about a change in fortunes and he was forced to seek a temporary exit in order to secure regular game time.

According to Sky Sports, Everton saw off competition from Crystal Palace and Valencia to bring Van de Beek to Goodison Park on a temporary basis in the January transfer window.
