Josh Liendo among several Canadians advancing to swimming semis at Glasgow 2026

Canadian swimmers were back in the pool Saturday, competing in heats on Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Josh Liendo qualified for a pair of semifinals at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. The Toronto native led all swimmers in the men’s 50m freestyle heats, finishing in 21.80 seconds. Montreal’s Antoine Sauve (22.80) also qualified for the 50m free semis, which will be held later Saturday.

In the men's 100m butterfly heats, Liendo’s 51.69 was third among all swimmers to earn his place in the semis.

Kylie Masse, of LaSalle, Ont., was second overall in the women’s 100m backstroke heats, qualifying for the semifinals later Saturday with a time of 59.90. Madison Kryger, of Niagara Falls, Ont., also qualified for the semis in 1:02.19.

Sophie Angus also qualified for the semis in the women’s 100m breaststroke, swimming to a time of 1:07.09 in her heat.

In the women’s 200m freestyle heats, Ella Jansen qualified for Saturday’s final with a time of 1:59.16.

Para swimmer Emma Van Dyk, of Hamilton, finished seventh in the women's 200m freestyle S14 heat and will race in the final later Saturday.
