Jose Mourinho: Roma boss does his own VAR check for Belotti's goal vs Betis

Jose Mourinho took matters into his own hands and did his own VAR check in Roma’s Europa League clash with Real Betis on Thursday evening.

Roma were in desperate need of a victory going into the match in Spain.

Prior to the game, Roma were positioned third in Group C having won once and lost twice in their opening three matches.

They fell behind at the Benito Villamarín Stadium as Sergio Canales gave the home side the lead with a deflected strike from 25 yards in the 34th minute.

Mourinho would have wanted a response from his side after the break and he got just that as Roma were level eight minutes into the second half.

Mady Camara found space on the right-hand side of the box and he pulled the ball back for Andrea Belotti to convert into an empty net.

The offside flag went up after Belotti hit the back of the net, with Camara adjudged to be offside.

VAR was called into action to check the goal.

It took a considerable amount of time to come to a decision. So, Mourinho decided to take matters into his own hands and conduct his own VAR check.

Mourinho watched a replay of the goal on a tablet to determine whether the goal should be ruled out or allowed to stand.

After seeing that Camara or Belotti were not in an offside position, Mourinho raced out of his seat and charged towards the pitch in celebration, telling his players that the goal was going to stand.

Some minutes later, VAR completed their check and allowed the goal.
