Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has aimed a sarcastic "GOAT" jibe at Mauro Icardi after the Galatasaray forward called him the "crying one".
Mourinho initiated the confrontation with Icardi by taking a dig at Galatasaray with a social media post. He used an image appearing to show ex-Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez handling the ball inside the box against Gaziantep - with Mourinho furious that a penalty was not awarded.
In the caption, Mourinho, who boasts 5.6million followers, wrote on Instagram: "In the Handball World Cup that ended last Sunday, my Portugal brilliantly reached the semi-finals and I want to congratulate them for such an achievement and the impact they will create on our country's youth."
Icardi was quick to offer a response to the Fenerbahce boss, as he issued the "Crying One" meme, in reference to Mourinho branding himself as the "Special One" during his first spell at Chelsea. Former Inter Milan star Icardi also posted his own picture of a handball by a Fenerbahce player that went unpunished.
Ahead of Fenerbahce's game against RSC Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday, Mourinho was asked about Icardi's comments and provided a no-nonsense answer. He replied: "He's such a huge ‘GOAT’ that I prefer not to comment on him, just stay silent and accept it."
He also responded to a question about whether he would show he's the "Special One" in the derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. "I have already shown I am ‘special’ with the 26 trophies I’ve won in my 25-year career. My career is not defined by one match," Mourinho added.
