John Cena: Sami Zayn tore his rotator cuff moments before debut match with huge star

Sami Zayn made his WWE main roster debut on the May 5 episode of Monday Night Raw back in 2015.

At the time, John Cena was the United States Champion, and was facing some of WWE’s brightest stars ever week in his open challenge.

This particular episode of Raw took place in Toronto, and WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart came out to introduce Zayn, who was part of NXT at the time, as Cena’s opponent for the night.

Things went wrong pretty much from the outset, as while making his entrance before the match, Zayn legitimately tore his rotator cuff.

As you can see from the video below, at the 2:40 mark, Zayn throws his arms up while making his entrance down to the ring.

Sami really gave it some, and it’s since come out that he legitimately injured his shoulder, and you can see he’s in some pain after the spot.

Because he’s an absolute warrior, and he had the opportunity to face one of WWE’s biggest ever stars, Zayn continued on with the match despite his serious injury.

Zayn had to take some time off during March and April of that year for injuries related to his shoulder, and it seems like his big entrance on WWE Raw may have aggravated those injuries.

As noted, Zayn went on to continue with the match, and he and Cena had the match of the night for that specific episode of Raw.

The match was so good that many people thought Zayn’s injury was part of the storyline, but it became clear in the days following the show that the injury was not planned.

Zayn was forced to undergo surgery and missed the next seven months of in-ring action, returning to NXT in December 2015.
