Jim Goodwin on awestruck Sir Alex Ferguson meeting as he aims to pick brains of Aberdeen managerial master

Jim Goodwin is desperate for his Aberdeen side to produce a performance for a sell-out Pittodrie crowd that guest of honour Sir Alex Ferguson would be proud of.

The Reds managerial legend is back in the Granite City for his statue unveiling on Friday before attending the clash with Dundee United 24 hours later.

Goodwin is hoping to catch a few words of wisdom from the arguably the greatest manager in the history of the game.

The Irishman said: “Last year he came to an event at his charity foundation when funds were being donated to a new development at Harmony Row.

“I was present along with Tony Fitzpatrick at the reopening of that facility.

“There were a number of his friends there, not just from football, but also people he grew up with.

“People he’s obviously kept in touch with over the years. I just sat quietly in the corner and listened, to be honest.

“Just to be in his company was a great thing. I’m sure he’ll be extremely busy this weekend but I hope on Friday or Saturday I may get a couple of minutes with him.

“If I got the opportunity to build up a relationship with him then that would be great, I’d love to do that.

“If that opportunity came my way, then absolutely. During my time at St Mirren, Tony was chief executive.

“He and Sir Alex were extremely close and spoke regularly. I used to love having a coffee with Tony and hearing about seem of the great stories from Fergie’s time at St Mirren.

“But I’m not going to put any demands on Sir Alex for advice. If he wants to offer me some I’d be very stupid not to take it. Hopefully that will happen.”
