Jessie Diggins, already the most decorated cross-country skier in U.S. history, added another American first on Tuesday.

Diggins became the first U.S. cross-country skier to win an individual gold medal at a world championships, taking the 10km freestyle in Planica, Slovenia.

She prevailed by 14 seconds over Swede Frida Karlsson. Another Swede, Ebba Andersson, took bronze in the interval start race.

Diggins earned her U.S. record-extending sixth career world championships medal and U.S. record-breaking second world championships gold medal. Diggins and Kikkan Randall won the U.S.’ lone previous world cross-country skiing title in the team sprint in 2013.

Diggins and Randall also won the U.S.’ lone Olympic cross-country skiing title, taking the team sprint in 2018.

Diggins was already one of four U.S. cross-country skiers to win an individual world championships medal, but on Tuesday she became the first to make it a gold medal.

Worlds continue Wednesday with the men’s individual start 15km freestyle.
