Jesse Lingard given time off by Man Utd following failed transfer away from club

Jesse Lingard has been given time off by Manchester United to clear his head after failing to secure a loan move.

After being told by interim boss Ralf Rangnick he could go on loan, Lingard was informed on deadline day he must stay.

Lingard, out of contract at the end of the season, saw his efforts to move blocked in the final hours of the January window.

Lingard has played just 88 minutes in the Premier League this season and could have been in line for a rare start in Friday night’s FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

However, Rangnick has now confirmed that the disappointed United star will be given a few days off and will therefore not be available for selection against the Championship side.

Rangnick said: "Jesse asked if we could give him a couple of days off to clear his mind. He will be back in training on Monday and part of the whole squad.”

The likes of Newcastle United and West Ham United were both linked with Lingard, who shone on-loan with the Hammers last term.

But Rangnick has confirmed that no club reached an agreement with Old Trafford bosses before the deadline, meaning he will remain at the club until his deal expires in the summer.

“It was a good week of training, we could train under normal circumstances and we're looking forward to the FA Cup game tomorrow,” Rangnick added.

“Three weeks ago, Jesse didn't want to leave, then he changed his mind.

“I had a chat with him 10 days ago and I could fully understand why he wanted to leave, to get game time for his future and the World Cup.

“I told him if he finds a club and the club find a solution with our club, I would allow him to leave, then with all the developments, things changed.
