Jelf Racing’s George Elmore sets world and British records at Coniston Records Week before Ashley Penfold raises bar

Medway powerboat racer George Elmore established a new world and British record during the 51st Coniston Records Week.

Elmore, racing for the Maidstone-based Jelf Racing team, clocked an average speed of 50.93mph in the GT30 class.

His record was later beaten by fellow GT30 racer Ashley Penfold and increased to 52.75mph and then to 53.00mph, but he was proud of his achievements.

Elmore said: “The week was difficult, the conditions just weren’t playing ball for us to achieve records. I’m immensely proud to claim my first world record and would like to congratulate Ash on beating my record.

“I’d like to thank the whole of [the] Jelf Racing Team for helping me achieve my dreams and for all the support the team gets.

“I’d also like to thank the officials and volunteers at Records Week for making the event happen.”

Following a rule change in the GT30 class the former record of 59.30mph, held by Elmore’s uncle, Colin Jelf, was frozen due to a 15kg weight increase.

The duo continued throughout the week looking to improve on the 53.00mph, but with conditions proving difficult neither was successful.
