Jeff Shi makes Wolves transfer pledge after signing Goncalo Guedes

Wolverhampton Wanderers chairman Jeff Shi insists the club were willing to remain patient in the summer market before adding to Bruno Lage's squad after announcing that an agreement with Valencia has been reached for the transfer of Goncalo Guedes.

The Portuguese forward has signed for Wolves in a deal reported to be worth £27.5million and becomes the club's second signing of the summer after the £20.5m capture of Nathan Collins. Guedes will add depth and quality to the attacking areas in Bruno Lage's squad after Raul Jimenez's injury and Fabio Silva left on loan to join Anderlecht.

A Valencia statement reads: "Valencia CF and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC have reached an agreement this Monday August 8th for the transfer of Gonçalo Guedes to the English club.

"Gonçalo Guedes joined Valencia CF in 2017 from Paris Saint Germain and played 198 games in all competitions, in which he scored 40 goals and provided 32 assists. His first match for the club was on September 9th, 2017 against Atletico Madrid, and in 2019 he was part of the side that won the Copa del Rey.

"The club thank him for his professionalism as a Valencia CF player and wish him the best of luck in this new stage of his career."

Wolves chariman Shi said: “We have been monitoring Goncalo for a long time and are very pleased to welcome him to Wolves. He has natural talent and has performed very well across Europe and for his country, and we think he is well suited to the Premier League.

“We are always looking to improve the squad with high quality, and have been patient to make sure we got the right player. Goncalo worked with Bruno at Benfica and played with many members of our squad previously, so we’re confident he will settle quickly into the group here.
