Jason Robinson and Apollo Perelini lead the tributes for Va’aiga Tuigamala after shock passing

Players and fans have paid tribute to former Wigan player Va’aiga ‘Inga’ Tuigamala, who has died at the age of 52.

The news was announced this morning, with the Warriors tweeting: “This morning, Wigan Warriors are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic news that former player Va’aiga (Inga) Tuigamala has passed away. Wigan Warriors send their deepest condolences to the family and friends at this awful time.”

The winger spent three seasons at Wigan having joined from Auckland Rugby Union in 1993, going on to win two Challenge Cup winners’ medals, two Regal Trophy winners’ medals and a Premiership winners’ medal.

Tuigamala also had spells with Wasps and Newcastle Falcons in rugby union where he was capped by the All Blacks, as well as representing his birth country of Samoa in both codes.

The RFL and Super League both offered their condolences, as did several Super League clubs. Wigan have confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held in his memory ahead of their game against Huddersfield this evening.

On receiving the sad news, several former teammates and opponents took to Twitter to pay their respects…

Jason Robinson: “Absolutely heartbroken! I owe so much to this amazing man! Literally helped change my life when he came to @WiganWarriorsRL from NZ. Sending all my love and condolences to the family at such a sad time. RIP brother #Inga #VaigaTuigamala

Apollo Perelini: “Saddest news to hear. We started primary school together and took our rugby journey to the UK. @Saints1890 for me and @WiganWarriorsRL for you my brother. RiL my dearest brother Inga (the winger) Tuigamala.”
