Jamie Carragher uses Mohamed Salah to argue Manchester United made Erik ten Hag mistake

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United have to rethink Erik ten Hag's approach in the transfer window - citing Liverpool's switch for Mohamed Salah.

The Anfield club signed the Egyptian in 2017 but initially, manager Jurgen Klopp had his sights on raiding Germany for their talents - namely Julian Brandt. At the time, the winger was linked with a £25m move from the Bundesliga to Liverpool but the then-Bayer Leverkusen man snubbed a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool's focus turned to long-standing target, Salah, who they failed to sign when Chelsea bought him from FC Basel. The 31-year-old endured a difficult spell at Stamford Bridge before enjoying a resurgence in the Serie A with Fiorentina and AS Roma.

Carragher compared the persistence of Liverpool over a personal preference to United's recruitment strategy and criticised their track record.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, four of Erik ten Hag's signings have been directly from the Eredivisie while several of the players he has signed were already known by the manager. The Dutchman's recruitment has come under fire after some of the arrivals have struggled to inspire positive results.

"When he (Jurgen Klopp) initially came in, an interesting one was Mohamed Salah and Jurgen Klopp is open about this. He didn't want to sign him, he wanted Julian Brandt," Carragher told the Stick to Football podcast, discussing who should be in control of transfers at clubs.
