Jamie Carragher: Chelsea fans are remembering when Gianfranco Zola humiliated him

Jamie Carragher wasn’t exactly loved by Chelsea fans during his career.

Whilst at Liverpool, the two clubs were embroiled in a rivalry that resulted in 15 meetings between the two sides in three seasons between 2005/06 and 2007/08.

Six of those meetings came in the Champions League as they met in the semi-finals on two occasions as well as being drawn in the same group one year.

“I’ll be honest. I couldn’t stand you as a club. It surpassed Everton and Manchester United as our rivalry for a period,” Carragher told Frank Lampard after his career.

It probably isn’t too surprising, then, that Carragher didn’t hold back when talking about Chelsea Football Club on Monday Night Football this week.

Carragher recently wrote an article suggesting Manchester United should approach Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel given the uncertainty surrounding the Stamford Bridge club.

Chelsea supporters reacted angrily and Carragher riled them up even more on Sky Sports.

“I had a few heated discussions at Stamford Bridge yesterday,” he said on Sky Sports. “Chelsea supporters, the same as any set of supporters, are very passionate about their club and at this moment feel like the world’s attacking them and they are defending their club.

“Chelsea Football Club have taken advantage of every other club in the last 20 years because of Roman Abramovich,” he added .“So if I give an opinion on someone taking advantage of them that’s just a fact, a way of life, and that’s the way it may be for Chelsea and you have to accept that.

“But if that’s my opinion of it I certainly don’t want Chelsea fans next time I go there questioning that opinion because that is exactly what Chelsea have done for 20 years.”
