James McNabney cited after Ireland U20 win v Australia

Ireland back row James McNabney has been cited for "an act of foul play" during their World Rugby U20 Championship victory over Australia on Thursday.

The Ulster academy forward made contact with Junior Wallabies wing Tim Ryan in the first half but the incident was not spotted by the match officials.

World Rugby said the 20-year-old was cited for an "act of foul play contrary to Law 9.13 (dangerous tackle)".

He will face an independent disciplinary committee hearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Rory Telfer's yellow card for a tackle late on in the same game was upgraded to red upon review and the replacement back will also face a disciplinary committee.

Ireland had already lost centre Hugh Cooney for the remainder of the tournament.

The Leinster academy player received a three-match ban for a direct red card after a similar challenge against England in the opening pool match.

Combined with a mandatory rest period after failing a head injury assessment in the same incident, he will not play again in the competition.

The three-match ban can be reduced to two if he undergoes the coaching intervention programme.

Head coach Richie Murphy is unable to call up replacements for players who are ruled out after getting sent off.
