James McClean issues honest message after Wigan Athletic flashpoint v Fleetwood
Wigan Athletic now find themselves sat 2nd in the league seven points off first placed Rotherham after a 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Tuesday evening.
The victory was somewhat tainted when in the 97th minute of the game, James McClean received a red card after coming together with Joe Garner who was also sent off.
Whilst Wigan will be pleased to be back to winning ways following a 3-0 defeat against Sunderland last weekend, Wigan now have to look ahead to their next few games without their experienced player to help with their efforts.
Wigan will be thankful that two of their next three league games come against AFC Wimbledon who sit just above the relegation zone and bottom of the league Crewe.
However, they will also be without McClean for the game against MK Dons who are just three points behind The Latics in the table meaning this could be a game that has a big impact on how the table looks on the final day of the season.
James McClean took to Instagram this morning to have his say on last night’s events.
He started by crediting the team for their performance saying: “Responded well to the weekend with another vital 3 points last night”
He then went on to explain the sending off from his perspective. He said: “On the red card incident first off am gutted that i possibly have to serve a 3 match ban and not be able to help the team but its simple if anyone on a football pitch or off it throws kicks, heads and punches at me ( he tried all three, which i could easily done but didn’t while i held him down like a wee boy ) then i will defend myself and i make no apologies for that.”

Whilst McClean claims his actions were justified, it’s looking highly likely that a three match ban
