James Garner makes clear Manchester United point amid Nottingham Forest transfer talk

Nottingham Forest loan star James Garner is hopeful of breaking into Manchester United's first-team squad next season.

Garner impressed at the City Ground last season, helping Forest to win Premier League promotion after 23 years away from the top flight. The 21-year-old played a total of 49 games for the Reds but has now returned to his parent club as he fights for a spot in United's squad next season.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is now set to make a decision following Garner's positive involvement in pre-season. But the youngster admits he is not too concerned about which position he plays next campaign.

"Personally, I'm not too fussed if I play as a 6 or 8," he said. "Throughout the academy, I played as a deeper-lying 6. People maybe questioned whether I could score and create but when I got to the [Under] 21s, I showed I could also play box to box.

"This season, I’ve played as a 6, 8 and in the No 10 position. For me, I enjoy 6 or 8." Garner continued: "In the academy, I was always a centre-back at six or seven, but got moved into midfield and it went from there. I’m enjoying my time."

Amid uncertainty as to whether he will play a role in ten Hag's team next season, the 21-year-old continues to attract interest from Steve Cooper's side and their Premier League rivals Leicester City.
