Jake Wightman crowned 1500m world champion with dad Geoff on stadium commentary

Jake Wightman wrote THE story of the World Athletics Championships by winning 1500 metres gold - with dad Geoff on stadium commentary.

The Nottingham-born Scot stunned a star-studded field by overhauling Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the final 200m.

“That’s my son and I coach him and he’s the world champion,” said Geoff, struggling to keep his composure. “Running, it’s coming home.”

Wightman jnr came into the race as British champion but with all the focus on his Olympic bronze medal-winning team mate Josh Kerr.

Yet when the time came for the talking to stop it was 28-year-old Wightman who produced the fastest time of the year to win in three minutes 29.23.

He becomes the first Briton since Steve Cram in 1983 to be crowned 1500m world champion.

"What was my emotion when I crossed the line, disbelief," said the champion, who was running a Parkrun with the general public as recently as last October.

"You always have to believe you can do this and I did. The dream scenario has come off. But it hasn’t sunk in. It will be days, maybe months, until I actually feel this is what’s happened."

Wightman snr is the voice of track and field in stadia the world over and has often wondered what it would be like to call his son home to a major title.

Even in his wildest dreams he could not have imagined that Jake’s first global medal would be one of this stature.

So unexpected was it that Jake had booked his flight home for half an hour after the scheduled medal ceremony tomorrow.

That was quickly changed, with World Athletics bosses rearranging Wightman’s podium moment for early this morning.
