Jake Paul presents new judging system for boxing after Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall controversy

After last Saturday’s highly controversial decision with Josh Taylor retaining his WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO belts, YouTube star Jake Paul now believes fights should be officiated by six judges. 

The claim comes after Taylor was dominated when coming up against mandatory challenger Jack Catterall, with the latter even flooring the Scot in the eighth round. 

Through the eyes of many across the world, it looked almost certain that the Tartan Tornado, fighting on home soil for the first time since 2019, had been defeated with ease by his opponent. 

Bizarrely, though, two of the three judges on the night in Glasgow believed Taylor had done enough. 

Taking to Twitter, Paul, who has fought professional five times and boasts a 5-0 record, wrote: “I think there should be six boxing judges for title fights. 3 pairs of 2. Each pair has to agree on the same score at the end of the round & if they don’t they briefly debate their reasoning. Almost like a jury system, these poor decisions change the shape of the sport forever.” 

For Catterall, the poor decision certainly does change the shape of the sport forever, with the judges’ scorecards meaning El Gato has a first loss beside his name after avoiding defeat in his previous 26 outings. 

Post-fight, Taylor said: “I don’t really care what anybody else thinks. I know in my heart that I won the fight.

“Jack deserves all the praise he got because he done better than everyone expected so fair play to him. But he never won the fight and I told him after it.

“I scored the bigger shots, I was the boss from midway through to the end.”

From the loser’s camp, trainer Jack Moore said his fighter was “heartbroken,” adding: “It’s difficult to put into words. You’re talking about a kid that’s worked
