Jadon Sancho gave perfect response to Leeds fans after what they did against Manchester United
On the opening day of the season, Leeds fans taunted Manchester United's homegrown contingent who had missed vital penalties in the shootout of the European Championship final.
"Sancho and Rashford, let their country down," was once again aired at Elland Road at the weekend, one of the few chants sung by the home crowd which is even repeatable.
The United winger's response was to do his talking on the pitch, producing a Man of the Match display, arguably the best outing he has enjoyed since he moved back to Manchester last summer.
No one can deny Jadon Sancho struggled upon signing from Borussia Dortmund, but his recent success is a timely reminder that patience is a virtue after such a slow start.
Part of the problem was that, due to his nationality, Sancho was regarded as a homegrown signing by many critics, when in fact, he should be treated with the same expectations as a player plying his trade in a new league.
The England international faced somewhat of a reality check in his opening months at United as he struggled to deal with the physicality of the league and the intense demands which had been placed upon him.
Another factor was the very scrutiny he was under as a £73million signing, still an enormous figure despite the fact it was £35m less than Dortmund had demanded for him a year earlier.
During his time in Germany, every goal or assist was viewed as a bonus for an exciting talent who could do no wrong, but now that he had joined United, the perception was different, one of an expensive signing who was failing to meet expectations after having previously exceeded them.
There can be no disputing the enormity of his impact on Sunday afternoon.
