Jaap Stam warns Erik ten Hag over Manchester United transfer pursuit for Antony

Manchester United favourite Jaap Stam has challenged Antony to improve in two areas as the Ajax man continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer window.

A stand-out player for United manager Erik ten Hag in the Eredivisie last season, Antony scored 12 goals and added 10 assists from 33 games in all competitions. Eight of those goals came in the league as Ten Hag and his vibrant Ajax team reigned supreme for the third time in four years.

It was a fitting end to his stint in Amsterdam as the incoming 52-year-old prepares for his next adventure. Brazilian forward Antony, 22, is among several Ajax stars who have been tipped to follow Ten Hag to Manchester along with Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber and Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

Given the success Ajax had under Ten Hag - domestically and in Europe when reaching the Champions League last-four in 2019 - links between his now former players were always going to come to the fore. Antony, too, reportedly has other suitors from across Europe on red alert.

Liverpool and Saudi-backed Newcastle have also been linked with the £50million rated forward. However, in order for him to shine in the Premier League or other marquee divisions, former United defender Stam thinks that Antony needs to fine-tune his undoubted quality.

Stam told Dutch publication VI: "I like watching Antony's game. Sometimes he exaggerates a little bit in his actions and behaviour, but he is a frivolous and unpredictable attacker, with speed and temperament in his game."
