‘It’s within our DNA’ – Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho reacts to scoring last minute winner against Newcastle

Fabio Carvalho has thanked Liverpool supporters for willing their team on to victory against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

In a dramatic game at Anfield, the Reds came from behind to beat the Magpies 2-1, with Carvalho scoring the winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

£60million signing Alexander Isak opened the scoring on his Newcastle debut before Roberto Firmino equalised in the second-half, in a match plagued by time wasting from the visiting team which ultimately came to nought with Carvalho firing home from a corner with more or less the last kick of the game.

‘I was just there in the right area and happily it felt for me,’ the attacking midfielder told BT Sport post-match.

‘Look at this! What else do you expect with these fans? They just kept us going. It’s just amazing to be here.

‘To be fair, it’s within our DNA to just keep going and we showed that today through the fans – they’ve helped us so much. I want to say a big thank you to them because without them this wouldn’t be possible.

‘But we stuck to the game plan, kept going, kept pushing and finally we did get the goal and the well-deserved three points.

‘Hopefully we can build on this. We definitely built on the result the other day and many more to come hopefully. We just need to keep going, keep working and then more wins will come.’

Carvalho, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, signed for Liverpool from Fulham over the summer for a fee of £5m, and scored his first goal for the club in last Saturday’s record equalling 9-0
