‘It’s a sting operation’ – Sneaky umpire catches Stefanos Tsitsipas in the act after Daniil Medvedev accusation

Stefanos Tsistipas was seemingly caught in the act receiving illegal coaching after an umpire was placed to monitor him and his father below his box.

The world No.4 suffered an Australian Open semi-final defeat to Daniil Medvedev in four sets on Friday in a match that was filled with emotion from both players.

One dramatic moment in the second set saw Medvedev launch into a furious outburst at umpire Jaume Campistol as he accused his opponent of receiving on-court instructions from his father – something which is not allowed.

The umpire later went onto issue Tsitsipas with a code violation for illegal coaching in the fourth set and camera footage now appears to show just how he was caught out.

An official, umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore, could be seen positioning herself below the Tsitsipas box in a bid to monitor the Greek star.

Barbara Schett on Eurosport confirmed that the tournament referee had moved closer to Tsitsipas’ box – along with Azderaki-Moore, who speaks Greek in order to verify Medvedev’s accusations.

Upon hearing Tstsipas’ father giving advice from the stands, Asderaki-Moore proceeded to signal to the umpire officiating the match to issue the 23-year-old with a code violation.

Former Aussie player Sam Groth, now working as a commentator for Australia’s Channel Nine network, explained how the situation unfolded.
