‘It just hasn’t quite worked’ – Rooney doubts futures of two Man Utd stars

Wayne Rooney has questioned the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba at Man Utd ahead of the summer transfer window.

The arrival of Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer had fans excited that they could potentially see the Red Devils challenging at the top of the Premier League again.

However, those signings have not gone to plan and, although Ronaldo has scored 18 goals in 32 appearances for Man Utd this season, Rooney reckons the signing of the Portugal international has not worked out.

“You’d have to say no at the minute,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “He’s scored goals, important goals in the Champions League early on in the season. He scored obviously the hat-trick against Tottenham.

“But I think if you’re looking to the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to lift Manchester United over these next two or three years.

“Obviously, Cristiano is getting on a bit. He certainly isn’t the player he was in his 20s and that happens — that’s football. He’s a goal threat but the rest of the game they need more and they need young, hungry players.”

Aside from the 2018-19 season where he scored 16 goals, Pogba has been a disastrous purchase for Man Utd after splashing £89m for his services in 2016.

The Red Devils now look set to lose him for nothing this summer with the France international looking set to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer, with numerous clubs reportedly interested.

And Rooney thinks it is now time for Pogba to move on from Man Utd
