Is there extra time in Champions League quarter-finals? Man City vs Real Madrid rules explained

Manchester City again lock horns with Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium tonight.

Meanwhile, Arsenal take on Bayern Munich in Germany after – like the City vs Real game – their first leg finished in a high-scoring draw.

There is a very real prospect that both games could end up level after 180 minutes. So what happens, then? MEN Sport goes through the rules on away goals, extra time and penalties for these Champions League knockout games.

Simply put, yes. If City vs Real Madrid (or Bayern vs Arsenal) finishes level on aggregate after two legs of 90 minutes each, the teams will play extra time – 30 more minutes.

If the teams still cannot be separated, a winner will be determined by a penalty shootout. As is common practice, the teams will take five penalties each and if they are still level, it will then go to sudden death.

Not anymore. The rule used to be that if teams were level then whichever had scored more away goals would progress. But that was abolished in all UEFA club competitions from the 2021–22 season onwards.

Now if doesn't matter if you draw 0-0 away and 3-3 at home, that tie would still go to extra time – and then possibly penalties.

Pep Guardiola's men are looking to move a step closer to another Premier League title – as well as complete another possible Treble.
