Ireland to face England at home in Nations League opener

The Republic of Ireland will begin their Nations League campaign at home to England on Saturday, 7 September, with Gareth Southgate's side also providing the opposition for the Irish in their final group game on Sunday, 17 November.

It's 33 years since the countries last met in a competitive fixture.

Since then, Ireland have played England in four friendly internationals, the first of which, in March 1995, infamously had to be abandoned due to hooliganism among the away support when Ireland led 1-0.

Subsequent friendlies were played in Wembley in 2013 and the Aviva Stadium in 2015, the former ending 1-1 after Shane Long had put the visitors in front with a powerful header, and the latter ending goalless.

The November 2020 friendly, played in an empty Wembley, ended in a 3-0 win for England, their first victory in the fixture since

Finland and Greece are Ireland's other opponents in this latest edition of the Nations League, with the Greeks, whom Ireland lost twice to in Euro 2024 qualifying, heading to Dublin on Tuesday 10 September.

October will see two away trips, first to Finland on Thursday 10 and then to Greece on Sunday 13.

The penultimate game of the group will see the Boys in Green hosting Finland on Thursday 14 November.
