Ireland's Gabriel Dossen earns European Championship medal in Armenia

Ireland's Gabriel Dossen has secured a medal at the European Championships in Armenia.

The Galway middleweight defeated Norwegian Mindaugas Gedminas to book his place in the semi-finals with a 4-1 split decision victory that secures at least a bronze.

Dossen had reached the quarter-final bout by achieving a unanimous victory over fourth seed Mofid Rami Kiwan of Bulgaria on Wednesday, and had the edge over Gedminas during Friday's three rounds.

At the final bell he appeared confident that he had done enough - a view confirmed by the judges.

Dossen's victory came after the trio of Sean Mari, Rickey Nesbitt and JP Hale all missed out on medals after quarter-final defeats.

Flyweight Mari was up against Kiaran MacDonald of England. But the Dubliner lost 4-1 by split decision as his opponent advanced to the last-four.

In the light flyweight quarter-finals, Nesbitt faced Bulgaria's Ergyunal Sebahtin but the Drogheda fighter's tournament ended with a defeat by unanimous decision.

Belfast native Hale lost 4-1 by split decision to Georgia's Artyush Gomtsayan in the lightweight ranks.

The trio's eliminations follow tournament-ending defeats for Jack Marley (heavyweight), Eugene McKeever (welterweight) and Luke Maguire (light middleweight) in Thursday's last-16 bouts.

Dylan Eagleson is the last remaining Irish fighter in action on Friday, with his quarter-final against Spanish opponent Gabriel Escobar Mascunano set for 3.45pm Irish time.
