Investigation under way after Gillingham's weekend opponents Walsall claim players' families racially abused at Priestfield

An investigation is under way after Gillingham’s weekend opponents Walsall claimed a number of their players’ families were subjected to alleged racial abuse during the goalless draw.

The two teams played out the stalemate in League 2 at Priestfield on Saturday - with the Saddlers releasing a statement shortly after the game.

Although Gillingham had not responded to the Midlands club's statement by Monday morning, Walsall’s statement said they were working with the Kent club and police to identify the culprit.

“The club have been made aware of an extremely unsavoury incident in the away end at Gillingham this afternoon whereby a number of our players' families were racially abused,” the Walsall statement read.

“We will be working with the police and Gillingham to identify the culprit and, once found, will be issuing a lifetime ban. Abuse of any nature will not be tolerated at our club.

“If any supporters have any information regarding the incident, we would encourage you to email info@walsallfc.co.uk.”
