Injury updates from Gillingham on Jonny Williams and Dom Jefferies ahead of League 2 match against Accrington Stanley

Gillingham look set to have a key man back in the squad this weekend but there’s a blow for another.

The Gills are heading to Accrington Stanley for a League 2 match on Saturday and there’s been good and bad news on the injury front for the management team.

The positive for the Gills is the expected return of attacking midfielder Jonny Williams.

Former Welsh international Williams, 30, has missed Gillingham’s last two matches following a hamstring strain but returned to full training on Thursday.

He’ll be assessed on Friday before the team travel north.

“He trained fully and that’s good,” said assistant coach Robbie Stockdale.

“He is a good character to have around the group and he is a very good player, so the more good players we have the better.”

The bad news for the Gills is that Dom Jefferies looks to be sidelined for a few weeks after picking up a knee injury in last weekend’s game against Sheffield United.

Commenting on the injury, Stockdale said: “Dom Jefferies will be missing but thankfully the scans that he’s had haven’t shown anything significant and it’s not as bad as first feared.

“I am not entirely sure on a time-scale but it’s not going to be too long I don’t think.

“Dom doesn’t actually know when he did it against Sheffield United, but he felt something in his knee, possibly from a tackle.

“He carried on playing and we took him off near the end. He has had scans, it has not come back with anything significant, it is just a little bit of swelling and we will have to see how that settles in the next week.”

Jefferies has started the last three games for the Gills and there will be relief his injury doesn’t look like it’s a serious one.
